Company DetailsThe Institute of Art & Ideas (IAI) is a charitable, not-for-profit organisation which utilises video debates and talks to make cutting-edge philosophy accessible to more people. They have also been the host of two major festivals, HowTheLightGetsIn and Crunch, at Hay-On-Wye in Herefordshire. HowTheLightGetsIn combines philosophy with music in late May/early June, whilst Crunch was a colourful late-year mix of music and art which the IAI hosted until 2011. Named after a Leonard Cohen lyric, HowTheLightGetsIn has grown into the biggest philosophy and music festival in the world, with over 35,000 people attending to listen to and engage with philosophers, musicians, academics, comedians and writers. Over 300 acts (such as Mercury-nominees former Streets’ frontman Mike Skinner, Ghostpoet and Kate Tempest) play music at the festival and thinkers such as Simon Blackburn and Roger Scruton take part in lectures and debates to make up a total of over 700 events over a ten day period. There are also legendary late night parties and yurt camping facilities at The Institute of Art & Ideas’ HowTheLightGetsIn festival, which grows in popularity every year. If you fancy getting into the HowTheLightGetsIn festival for free, then you’ll be very interested to know that the IAI recruits volunteers as stewards for the event as early as January each year. As well as free access to all events, IAI stewards can also look forward to free camping space and a discount at certain food outlets at the HowTheLightGetsIn festival. Although you don’t strictly need to make yourself available for the full duration of the festival, applicants who can commit to join as a steward volunteer for the complete event may be given priority over other applicants. Daily shifts for IAI stewards are typically between 6 and 8 hours and successful applicants will need to pay a small deposit to book their place at the festival. Once all of your shifts are complete and you’ve returned your uniform, your deposit will be returned - and you’ll have bagged some great entertainment along with some excellent work experience.
