Job Description

Spend a season living, working and skiing in one of Canada’s top world-class ski resorts, Whistler Blackcomb. Begin your time away with an intensive 4-week ski-instructor course, giving you all the necessary training to pass the CSIA Level 1 examination. On successfully completing your Level 1, you’ll be eligible for employment by Whistler Blackcomb as a Whistler Kids ski instructor, giving you the means to fund an incredible ski season.

Our programme is the perfect way to qualify as an instructor and then earn money teaching in the same season. Normally, Whistler Kids will only accept applications from people who are already qualified, so by taking part in this programme you are able to access jobs which would otherwise not be available to you.

What does the job involve?

Your first few days in Whistler will be spent on a welcome and orientation course, giving you the opportunity to meet our country rep, get to know the rest of your group, and familiarise yourself with the resort. This will include a ZipTrek tour and banking guidance to ensure that you are ready to start work. You will then embark on the 4-week Whistler Blackcomb Ski School University Instructor Course. This has been designed by Whistler Blackcomb to give you all the necessary training to pass the CSIA Level 1 examination in early December, and then secure your job for the rest of the season.

Your days as a ski instructor will be spent working with children between the ages of 3-11. Some of these children will be new to skiing, and you will have to nurture them through the first steps of putting on skis and learning to stop on the nursery slope. Other children will have been skiing all their lives and already feel confident in their ability. You will have to tailor your lessons to fit the skill level of those in your group, and will be spending your time on either the nursery slopes or the beginner slopes of the mountains, depending on your group’s experience.

Working as a kid’s ski instructor is an exciting position, but also one of responsibility. Before you head out to Canada on this programme, you will have two interviews to ensure that you are well-suited and prepared for the job. One will be with us over the phone when we receive your application, and the other will take place with the Whistler Kids General Manager at our September briefing course before the season starts.

This is a full time role, and you can expect to be working an average of 4 – 5 days a week throughout the season. Working in a tourist resort means that your weekly working hours will vary according to the number of tourists and the demand for ski lessons. During peak times, such as Christmas, you may be working 6-7 days a week, while in the quieter weeks there might only be 2-3 days when you are needed. Over the past few years, Whistler Kids instructors have averaged around 32 hours per week across the season.

During the season, you will be living in the Whistler Blackcomb staff housing. These self-contained flats contain two bedrooms and sleep up to four people, so you should expect to share a room. You will receive a meal on the days that you are working, but will be self-catering for the rest of the time. Your accommodation will be included during your training course, but once you start working, the cost of the accommodation (about $12 per night) will be deducted from your pay cheque.

The season for Whistler Kids generally finishes in mid-April, but the exact date will depend on how good the snow is! We end our programme at the end of April to give you some time to enjoy some final skiing and relax after all of your hard work.

Who would be suitable?

In order to be eligible for this programme, you need to have experience working with children aged 3-11 (just babysitting is not enough), or be willing to gain the relevant experience before the season begins. It is also necessary that you have a good rapport with children and will enjoy working with them everyday.

You need to be prepared for long days of hard work on the slopes, and be able to remain positive and enthusiastic even when you are tired, or conditions are poor. You must be a trustworthy and responsible individual – someone who parents would not mind leaving their child with for the day.

You will need to be a confident intermediate skier who is able to ski parallel, pole plant and be confident on all intermediate slopes.

What’s included?

- Access to your own personal ‘My Oyster’ account and excellent preparation and support from Oyster throughout the whole process, including a one-to-one interview and informal briefing.
- A UK briefing day covering childcare issues, work advice and a meeting with a senior manager from Whistler Kids.
- Transport from the airport on arrival and accommodation in a central Vancouver hostel on your first night.
- Assistance organising your Social Insurance Number and bank account, and support from our Whistler representative, including regular social meetings.
- Whistler University fees including tuition from Level 4 instructors, exam fees for the CSIA Level 1 Ski Instructor exam and accommodation fees during those 4 weeks.
- Organisation of staff accommodation before arrival (free during the Whistler University course and then about $12 per night).
- 4 week ski pass, including 20% discount off food, for the duration of the Whistler University course.
- Full season ski pass, with staff discounts, once you begin your job.
- In-resort discount on buying skis and boots when you first arrive in Whistler.
- Bus ticket back to Vancouver at the end of the season.
