Job Description

As an Apprentice this post will operate and maintain, under supervision, a range of functions to support the Natural Infrastructure Officer, Farm Manager  and Duchy College Animal Centre  Manager to manage and develop the Animal Unit at Poole Farm as part of the Derriford Community Park project:




  • Health, husbandry and welfare of animals kept at Poole Farm

  • Assist with land management of the farm site and fields

  • Record keeping associated with animal management

  • Assist with education activities with the schools and events programme

  • Assist with the volunteer programme at Poole Farm



Communications on the project through social media and other press



As this post is an apprentice role the post holder will work closely with a supervisor / manager, and will work from instructions.




  1. With direction the post will be required to:




  • Be responsible for the maintenance of animal health and welfare, for animals kept at the Poole Farm Animal Unit

  • Assist with the maintenance of livestock and land management activities

  • Assist in liaising with stakeholders and volunteers to help organise the events and the education programme

  • Assist with the delivery of the events and education program

  • Assist with maintenance of biodiversity  

  • Assist in producing social media publicity, letters, e-mails and other  correspondence as part of the project

  • Closely monitor animal health and maintain animal health record systems, liaising with a Veterinary Surgeon when necessary

  • Keep records of resource usage and order consumables required to maintain the Animal Unit (e.g animal feeds, disinfectants)

  • Assist with ensuring that the site is maintained in a secure and safe manner

  • To fully comply with the requirements of the apprenticeship programme eg attendance at review meetings, etc



Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade of the post




  1. Post holder is required to concentrate particularly when inputting data, and checking and/or processing documentation and/or financial information.

  2. Post holder is required to work on the weekends where necessary.

  3. Post holder will be lone working at some points.

  4. Post holder will need to be capable of dealing with a range of animal species, including small mammals and farm livestock



Post holder will need to have the ability to communicate with the public.

Skills Required :

Essential:




  1. Qualification at Level 2 in Animal Management or equivalent.

  2. Practical experience of working with a range of animal species, including farm livestock.

  3. Full Driving Licence.

  4. Good experience of practical land-based skills.

  5. Knowledge and experience of good health and safety practice.

  6. 2 GCSE’s A* - C in English and Mathematics or equivalent.

  7. Experience of working as part of a team.

  8. Experience of working towards deadlines.

  9. Good communication skills and willingness to undertake vocational experience.

  10. Understanding of the importance of confidentiality including the Data Protection Act.

  11. Knowledge of using PC applications to include Microsoft Office and Excel.

  12. Willingness to complete the qualifications which are part of the Apprenticeship role.



Desirable:




  • Knowledge of social media.

  • Experience of working as part of or with volunteer groups and schools.

  • Understanding of good animal welfare practice for conservation.

  • Good typing and keyboard skills.
