Job Description

This apprenticeship will be hosted with Crossbar Coaching.



‘Crossbar Coaching’ is a Sport coaching company based in Shropshire, established in 2008, that aims to meet the needs of young players from 5-18.



Professional but personable sport coaching solutions are provided for primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and junior sport clubs wishing to deliver high quality, safe, enjoyable and relevant sport sessions.



The organisation has been established by Gavin Cowan (former Shrewsbury Town FC and AFC Telford United player), Gavin’s motivation for this work is driven by the belief that the development of young people can be achieved through sport across the curriculum as well as alternative sports.



Main responsibilities include:




  • To help organise and deliver sports instruction to primary school children.

  • To ensure sustainability of activity and increase the quality of PE and School Sport. To encourage students/players to participate.

  • To understand Risk Assessments and ensure that reasonable steps have been taken to protect participants at all times.

  • To immediately report all accidents or injuries to the Coach in charge or teacher and complete report forms as required.

  • To assemble and dismantle equipment when required and to check the safety of all equipment and ensure it is used in a safe and proper manner.

  • At the end of each activity, ensure that all equipment is stored correctly and the work area is left in a clean and tidy manner.

  • To ensure that safe practices are followed and Crossbar Coaching's Child Protection Policy is adhered to.

  • To assist and support teachers in delivering high quality coaching.

  • To help set up and coach at out of school hour’s clubs and development centres.



Candidates will deliver sport and physical activities to children and young people, both in school curriculum time following the PE National Curriculum and/or set programs of study and also deliver a range of OSHL, (Out Of School Hours Learning) extracurricular activities before school, at lunch times, after school and in school holiday periods 5 days a week including some evenings and weekends.

Skills Required :

  • Basic computer skills.

  • Reliable with strong time management.

  • Self-motivated and have a passion for teaching/coaching.

  • Previous experience of physical activity delivery would be highly beneficial.

  • Demonstrate and articulate that they have a clear passion and drive to inspire young people through sport and physical activity.

  • Meet outcomes and results with a positive outlook, and a clear focus on expectations for high quality standards.

  • Critically assess own performance in a responsible and credible manner.

  • Deal with a range of different situations. 

  • Be an empathic communicator, able to see things from the other person's point of view.

  • Articulate themselves in a professional well-presented and professional manner at all times.

  • Motivate and instil confidence in others, have a presence and be able to get on with others and be a team-player.

  • No criminal convictions or cautions that would prevent you working with children.



Future Prospects : Potential to progress on to become permanent Sports Coach with Crossbar Coaching for the right candidates.
