Job Description

1610 Limited are looking for one candidate to complete a Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Coaching Learn to Swim at Torrington Pool & Sports Hall. 



The successful candiate will have a duel role which will include working as an activity leader which at 1610 includes lifeguarding duties, as well as assiting the Swim & Sports Manager and Senior Swim Coach in the development and delivery of the Swim Academy. 



The successful candidate will initially be acting as an 'in the water' assistant for the existing swim teaching team. As the candidate progresses, they will gradually take on their own groups once qualified as a Swimming Teacher. 



In addition to learning how to deliver swimming sessions, the successful candidate will be trained to assist in Administration and Marketing of Swimming activities.



The successful candidate will as mentioned be trained to become a qualified Lifeguard and supervise pool users. 



Other duties will involve cleaning and setting up and taking down quipments for a range of poolside, and dryside activities. 



The 12 Month Coaching Learn to Swim Apprenticeship Framework is designed for those individuals wishing to pursue a career in the leisure industry through a teaching route; it is entirely work based and work related. The swimming programme gives you a wide range of knowledge and experience, and most importantly the qualifications to help you develop a career within the leisure industry. At the end of this apprenticeship you will be a fully qualified swimming teacher, with the ability to teach lessons to groups of swimmers from beginners to experienced, children to adults.



Swimming teachers help people of all ages and abilities to develop swimming skills and techniques, or exercise in water. If you are a good swimmer, and you could motivate and inspire others to develop their skills, this Apprenticeship could suit you well. You would need to be able to encourage people and put them at their ease. You would also need to have perseverance and patience with slower learners.



As a qualified swimming teacher you would:




  • Teach or coach one-to-one or in groups

  • Plan and deliver sessions appropriate to the level of swimmer

  • Provide explanations and demonstrate swimming techniques

  • Correct faults in swimming techniques and identify ways to improve performance

  • Make sure safety standards are followed

  • Organise and supervise assistants and helpers


Personal Qualities :

  • Keen interest in Swimming

  • Enjoy working with people of a variety of age groups and backgrounds (paticulary children)

  • Friendly and approachable manner

  • A willingness to learn



Skills Required :

  • Good communication skills

  • IT skills 

  • Organisational skills

  • Good Swimming ability must be able to:- jump/dive in deep water, swim 50m in less than 60 seconds, swim 100m continuously on front and back in deep water, tread water for 30 seconds, surface dive to floor of the pool, climb out of pool unaided without using ladder or steps



Future Prospects : The role could lead to the successful candidate becoming a swimming teacher, with further opportunities to become a senior coach.
