Job Description

To be part of the team, looking after the animals in our care, associated paperwork and liaising with the other members of staff, the public, suppliers or Inspectorate. To attend college when required and complete college work on time.



The duties of the post are as follows:




  • To carry out all designated duties associated with the welfare of animals in your care with the animal care assistant that you are assigned to.

  • To clean animal accommodation and other areas to the approved standard, using cleaning agents and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions and in compliance with COSHH regulations.

  • To provide appropriate clean bedding and a constant supply of fresh water. To ensure each animal is correctly fed.

  • To observe each animal in the Centre and report any problems or concerns to the Animal Centre Supervisor.

  • To exercise the animals where appropriate. Ensuring the animal is kept under control at all times.

  • To monitor and control the environmental conditions to suit the requirement of the animals.

  • To vaccinate and identichip all relevant animals as appropriate once training has been given.

  • To assist with regular behavioural assessments of animals as required by the Branch.

  • To assess animals and complete a temperament assessment record and discuss any behavioural issues with the Animal Centre Supervisor.

  • To work at all times in accordance with the Health and Safety.

  • Policy determined by the Branch Trustees.

  • To clean equipment and dispose of waste.

  • To ensure the security and safety of animals on site is maintained at all times safeguarding against escape or theft.

  • To report any items of damage or repair to the Animal Centre Supervisor.

  • To keep the working and public environment clean and tidy in accordance with Health and Safety legislation.

  • To be aware of the individuals responsibility towards Health and safety policies and procedures as set out in the Health and Safety manual.

  • To communicate appropriately with members of the public and all visitors to the site.

  • To maintain and update records for each animal ensuring that the details are recorded clearly.

  • To assist the public when selecting an animal. To advise on compatibility between new owners and animals and ensure all necessary information is given regarding future care, including costs involved with pet ownership and our policy on neutering.

  • To demonstrate a pleasant and helpful attitude at all times and maintain a good personal appearance.

  • Any other duties defined by the Branch Manager, Assistant Branch Manager or Animal Centre Supervisor as being to the benefit of the Branch or those animals in its care.

  • The successful candidate must be able to show initiative and want to make a difference to animal welfare.
