Job Description

Key Responsibilities




  • To engage in developing skills to provide high standards of clinical and personal care to all children, young people and younger adults.

  • To support, in conjunction with parents/carers and nursing staff, a plan of care to meet the identified needs of the children, young people and younger adults.

  • To involve children, young people, younger adults and their families whenever possible in care planning and delivery.

  • To carry out tasks delegated by a registered nurse.

  • To report to shift co-ordinator any concerns surrounding the care, condition or behaviour of the child/family.

  • To maintain accurate records according to policy.

  • To maintain confidentiality of children, young people, younger adults and families at all times and respect confidentiality of all Hospice and staff affairs.

  • To support siblings during sibling events and whilst resident in the Hospice.

  • To participate in outings/activities either planned or at short notice.

  • To support and  participate in hydrotherapy sessions with children, young people and younger adults in collaboration with the shift co-ordinator and  wider carte team.

  • To participate in Hospice Open Days and Remembrance Days where appropriate.

  • To be aware of the procedure for reporting incidents and potential complaints to the Shift Co-ordinator or Senior Nurse.

  • To be aware of the correct procedures for the authorisation and reporting of  sickness  and absence



Training and Development




  • To fulfil the educational requirements of the course work to enable development of theoretical clinical competence and skills. Through undertaking, the practical competency based training programme, with assessment and re-assessment at regular intervals demonstrate the transition between theory and practice.

  • To be able to recognise the boundaries of your role/ responsibilities and work within your level of competence.

  • To recognise your own limitations and when you should seek support from others

  • To attend staff development programmes, training courses, conferences and study days as deemed necessary.

  • To attend compulsory staff meetings.

  • To undertake specific training for specialist pieces of equipment or procedures and remain updated/ competent.

  • To take responsibility for attendance at mandatory training sessions as deemed necessary by the organisation.



Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults




  • To comply with Hospice and Leicester City LSCB Policy, Procedures and Practice

  • To follow hospice policy regarding the management of safeguarding concerns.

  • To access mandatory safeguarding training and demonstrate competence at the required level.

  • To report on to the shift coordinator any incidents or potential incidents

  • Actively participate in risk assessment relevant to the area

  • To maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and presentation.

  • To act at all times in a professional manner, respecting the needs of colleagues and co-operating to maintain a harmonious working environment

  • Maintain the reputation of the hospice, both when at work and outside of work hours.

Future Prospects : With experience the apprentice role can turn into a full time Hospice Care Assistant role.
