Job Description

The horticulture apprenticeship role based at The Downs has been created to principally assist an experienced pair of gardeners with the upkeep of the formal gardens and surroundings, with duties including:




  • Maintaining hedges, borders, boundaries, fencing, pathways and walkways

  • Landscaping

  • Mowing the lawns

  • Restoring the flower beds

  • Propergating

  • Planting

  • Pruning

  • Strimming

  • Weeding

  • Watering duties



The employer is wishing to employ a motivated apprentice, who is willing to be part of the horticulture team. Once trained, there may be some tasks to be performed independantly due to the size of the grounds. You will be instructed and guided throughout, with training given in a wide range of horticultural and estate tasks.



The apprenticeship will give you the skills and knowledge to achieve an Intermediate Diploma in Horticulture.



Ideally the company is looking to engage with an individual who holds some horticulture experience (demonstrated through either a part time opportunity, voluntary work or by tending to own/family’s garden, allotment or land. This is not completely necessary if an interest and determination is clearly demonstrated.

  • Wanting to build a career in horticulture

  • A proactive and positive approach is needed, having confidence to work alongside others and being able to work on your own initiative

  • Strong communication skills, especially recognising the expectations of the residents



Skills Required :

A level of practical knowledge and understanding relating to gardening would great, as this shows a practical interest, however a strong willingness to learn is equally as important.



A driving license is useful but is not essential, as long as you are able to get to and from the employer reliably and access Duchy College Rosewarne for your weekly training.



Future Prospects : The appointed apprentice will be working towards a level 2 Apprenticeship, with future prospects including continuing on with your horticulture education or increased prospects of a skilled job in your chosen industry.

It is strongly hoped that an employment opportunity will offered to the apprentice upon successful completion of this apprenticeship.
