Job Description


  • By offering some of the industry’s best training and development, you will be supported in learning how to deal with customer prescriptions accurately.

  • You will also be trained to sell over the counter medicines, order and label medication and manage and rotate stock levels. You will also learn about how we sell our non-prescription medication, and how we display it on our shelves.

  • We will also train you to understand about patient confidentiality and data protection which are especially important when dealing with operational queries with GPs. Patient care is at the heart of all of our training, and so this role is quite a responsibility! Don’t worry; we will give you plenty of training and support to help you complete your apprenticeship, ready for your next challenge.

  • As an Apprentice Pharmacy Assistant you will be responsible for providing excellent customer service and working to high standards, meeting individual and team objectives. You will also be responsible for assisting in the smooth running of the Branch by following Company procedures, as well as assisting with the dispensing and labelling of prescription items.

  • Duties will increase as you progress through the comprehensive training programme; covering all aspects of Pharmacy services, in which you will gain the knowledge and recognised qualification to successfully carry out your duties as a Qualified Pharmacy Assistant.

  • To be successful in this role you will need a desire to learn and progress in our business.

  • This position is ideally suited to someone who is hard working, motivated, has good communication, and interpersonal skills and as well as good timekeeping and organisational skills.

Skills Required :

  • Firstly, we would like you to have an interest in our sector, and we would need you to enjoy working with people, have a patient and sympathetic manner, but also to be friendly as you will play a vital part in helping to strengthen our bond with the community.

  • We will need you to be able to use discretion and be tactful when discussing confidential information, or a customer’s illness. We need you to be methodical and organised, and be able to carry administrative roles in areas such as record keeping.

  • You will have good communication skills as you will need to be able to clearly explain instructions to customers, based on the advice that the Pharmacist will give you. You must have the ability to remain calm when under pressure and maintain a high level of concentration.

  • Good attention to detail is also important when dealing with medication. It is also essential that you can work as part of a team.

  • If you have worked in a retail environment, then that would be a real advantage to us, we in turn will train and develop you into a confident team member who can provide excellent customer service in a pharmaceutical environment.



Future Prospects : Successful completion of this apprenticeship could lead you to undertake the Dispensing Technician qualification and more besides! You will also, in time, have the opportunity to consider a Supervisory position and a relevant qualification, if this is the route that you wish to consider with Cohen’s. In addition to this opportunity, with these qualifications you could also look at other careers paths in the industry such as a Clinical Support worker, Dispensing Optician or even use your experience to work in hospitals, medical laboratories manufacturing medicines and field-based pharmaceutical sales.
