Job Description

This position is for an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering at Thatcham Research’s Track Laboratory supporting the departments track testing projects. Whilst focused on the track programme they may be expected to support other activities, such as crash as and when required. Tasks include the fabrication of equipment, service and maintenance of equipment, along with the preparation of test vehicles.




  • The successful applicant will be required to attend college as per training agreement and maintain personal development both internally and externally. Additional basic motor vehicle and 12v electrical system training will be provided internally at Thatcham’s apprentice academy. They will be required to communicate with colleagues in both Crash and Track teams, Team Leader/Manager and individuals that support Crash or require support from Crash, including but not limited to those in Research, Communications and Fleet and Supply.

  • This role will support projects that have a direct influence on the achievement of Thatcham’s 3-year plan, with clear deliverables which directly support us as a centre of excellence as well as driving the adoption of safer cars; as this role supports commercial activities it is also an important part of our drive to commercialise our expertise. The role will also substantially influence the quality and efficiency of the Crash and Track test programmes and the revenue it provides. The work of the Crash and Track team has a high profile both internally and externally and the results are expected to drive safety improvement across the European Automotive Industry

The Crash and Safety department at Thatcham Research is world renown for the high quality of its research and commercial testing. They are a highly trained and very dedicated professional team with a broad skills base.



Automotive safety testing is a very interesting and exciting area in which to work. The technologies used to improve our safety in vehicles, both passive and active are moving at an ever-increasing pace. 



As a member of the team you will be working at the fore front of vehicle safety testing. You will gain experience form all the other team members and be exposed to the very latest automotive designs and technologies, you will meet and work with senior figures from the global safety community and motor manufacturers.



This job will cover a broad range across the track facilities along with the potential to support Crash testing when the need arises. The main role will be to support the Track testing program with the fabrication of bespoke parts. The parts are used to allow vehicles to be tested in a controlled, safe and efficient manner. Much of our test equipment is also made in house so the applicant will play a part in the design, manufacture and prove out of the equipment.



The applicant will be required to assist with the fabrication of these components using a lathe and milling machine combined with a combination of heating, drilling and welding all with supervision.  The preparation of test vehicles will also be a significant part of the day to day job. This will include the wheel alignment of the vehicles and the fitment of fabricated bracketry to allow for the mounting of test equipment. For this specific training will be provided.



Support to the data team including the fitment of data capture equipment will also be part of the job. For this specific training will be provided. General support to testing through preparation and maintenance of equipment and the facility will also be part of the role.
