Job Description

Overall Purpose of the role



Working with the Senior Solicitor to provide quality legal advice for the Arts Council and managing our relationships with the Shared Legal Services at the BIG Lottery Fund.  This is a 2-year apprenticeship, studying for the CILEx Level 3 Paralegal Apprenticeship qualification.



Main day to day responsibilities




  • Drafting legal documents under the supervision of the Senior Solicitor.

  • Maintaining departmental records including the deeds register, the seal register and other procedural reports.

  • Legal research – predominately web-based research using appropriate programmes to identify statute and case law.

  • Reviewing documents and providing legal advice on routine and non-contentious matters (with the support of the Senior Solicitor), once the required level of training is complete. For example, review of funding agreements or company terms and conditions.

  • Acting as the first point of contact for the team, responding to queries and liaising with internal and external stakeholders, and greeting visitors as required.

  • Managing the legal service e-mail inbox and open other correspondence, ensuring that requests for legal advice are passed on to an appropriate lawyer

  • Contributing to the smooth running of the office by maintaining the information and other office systems.This will include:

  • Preparing bundles of documentation

  • Filing, and managing case files

  • Monitoring case progression

  • Arranging and taking minutes at internal and external meetings 

  • Diary management and other support to the Senior Solicitor/Director Governance and Planning

  • Purchasing and assisting in the payment and management of monthly fee accounts from external solicitors



You will combine your ability to plan and prioritise with a flexibility and curiosity to work beyond this area of work, contributing to areas outside of your daily responsibilities.



You will be required to comply with the Arts Council’s Equality and Diversity policies and to work towards their successful implementation.



Key relationships



You will work closely with the Arts Council Senior Solicitor and the Shared Legal Services team at the Big Lottery Fund. You will also be in contact with a range of other staff including Directors and Senior Managers as you help to ensure that their requests for legal advice are dealt with.

Future Prospects : CILEx Law School has strong employer links within this industry sector and following on from successful completion of this apprenticeship there may be the opportunity for progression onto Chartered Legal Executive training.
