Job Description

We are currently recruiting up to 60 healthcare assistant apprentices in 6 separate locations:



Sefton, Warrington, Wigan, Halton, St Helens, Knowsley.



We are delighted to confirm we are recruiting Apprentices across our inpatient services at North West Boroughs Healthcare.



It’s an exciting time to join us, as we’ve recently expanded our 0-19 services, eating disorder services and criminal justice team.



There’s a great support and development package available which includes monthly mentoring from our experienced teams, a peer network group, support from our Vocational Skills Coordinator, a dedicated college mentor and of course the ability to learn on the job and get paid!  You'll also complete the Care Certificate, which will provide knowledge and skills in caring for our patients and service users.

Job purpose:



To provide a high standard of healthcare by assisting with and carrying out a range of duties as directed by the nurse in charge and in line with individual care and treatment plans for allocated patients on a shift by shift basis.



The post holder will carry out assigned tasks involving direct/indirect service user care and support service users under the supervision of a qualified practitioner.



The post holder will demonstrate an attitude which respects and values service users’ choice and works along side them and their carers to ensure they are at the centre of care planning.

Duties and responsibilities:



1. Clinical



Under the direction of the qualified practitioner, participate in the delivery of planned care for allocated service users.



The post holder will undertake a range of assigned duties which include:




  • Assist in the physical, emotional psychological and spiritual care of service users under the supervision of a registered nurse. Work within a team to manage risk and the implementation of the service user’s care plan.

  • Provide information to enable the effectiveness of care to be evaluated

  • Help with the involvement of service users, and carers/relatives in the delivery of care

  • Provide support and assistance with relatives/carers, directing them to the appropriate professional.

  • Assist in providing care and support to service users with a range of personal needs. These will include as directed hygiene/dressing, support with dietary and fluid intake and ensuring optimum comfort with an emphasis on a person-cantered approach.

  • Complete physical observations, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, weight and basic tests, urinalysis, blood glucose and report the results.

  • Assist with health promotion activities as directed

  • Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent medical and psychiatric emergency situations

  • Provide an escort to service users for specific appointments or treatment as requested by the nurse in charge.

  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills when interacting with service user’s utilising both verbal and non-verbal communication. The use of observational skills and de-escalation techniques to avert challenging situations.

  • Report appropriate observations and any concerns regarding service user       care to the qualified practitioner. Participation in observing and supervising service users that need continuous observations.

  • Assist in the management of challenging behaviours utilising approved techniques. Participate and contribute within de briefing sessions following an incident.

  • Ensure appropriate records are maintained under the direction of the qualified practitioner.

  • Contribute to the development of services by sharing ideas/thoughts and giving feedback at appropriate forums.

  • Contribute to service improvement initiatives to enhance quality of service user care

  • Contribute to the effective and efficient use of resources

  • Understand and adhere to Trust policies, procedures and clinical guidelines

  • Report incidents, near misses and hazards to the nurse in charge

  • Work with intermittent, direct supervision.

  • The post holder is required to report to, and seek the advice of a registered professional and/or Assistant Practitioner/Healthcare Support Worker with any queries.



2. Education and development:




  • Develop own skills and knowledge as identified in the Trust annual Performance Development Review and provide evidence of this

  • Completion of the Trusts Care Certificate, within an agreed timescale.

  • Undertake NVQ 2 training or equivalent, within an agreed timescale

  • Undertake Literacy/Numeracy Level 1 training within an agreed timescale

  • Undertake the Trust 4 day Control and Restraint training programme.

  • Clinical health skills/competencies.

  • Participate in regular supervision, engage in reflective practice and be committed to continued development.



3. Research and audit:




  • Participate in appropriate audit, quality assurance programmes and research as directed.



4. Standard requirements:




  • Confidentiality:  Confidentiality/data protection regarding all personal information and Trust activity must be maintained at all times (both in and out of working hours) in accordance with professional codes of conduct and relevant legislation such as the Data Protection Act.  The post holder should ensure that they are familiar with and adhere to all Trust Information Governance policies and procedures. Any breach of confidentiality will be taken seriously and appropriate disciplinary action may be taken.

  • Code of Conduct:  Maintain a consistently high standard of conduct and to provide the highest standard of service in accordance with the Trust Code of Conduct for all employees.

  • Health and Safety: Employees must be aware of the responsibilities placed upon them under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, paying due regard to health and safety in the workplace and management of risk to maintain a safe working environment for service users, visitors and employees.

  • Infection Prevention and Control:  Employees must be aware of their responsibilities to protect service users, visitors and employees against the risks of acquiring health care associated infections, in accordance with Trust policy.

  • Professional standards and performance review: Maintain consistent high professional standards and act in accordance with the relevant Professional Code of Conduct. Employees are expected to participate in the performance review process.

  • Service/Departmental Standards: Support the development of performance standards within the Service/Department to ensure the service is responsive to and meeting the needs of its customers.

  • Finance: All Trust staff will comply with financial processes and procedures

  • Safeguarding: The Trust has a responsibility to ensure that all children/young people and adults are adequately safeguarded and protected. As a consequence, all Trust employees are required to adhere to national and local safeguarding policies/procedures and to act upon any concerns in accordance with them.



5. Summary:



This job description is an outline of the key tasks and responsibilities of the post and the post holder may be required to undertake additional duties appropriate to the pay band. The post may change over time to reflect the developing needs of the Trust and its services, as well as the personal development needs of the post holder.



Wage structure:



£3.50 per hour year 1 -  range £4.05 - £7.50 year 2
