Job Description

The apprentice will learn and develop the skills for repair, adjustment, maintenance and refurbishment of wheelchairs and associated equipment to departmental and manufacturers’ standards.



Learn how to carry out equipment-related administrative tasks associated with the role of workshop technician.



There will also be the opportunity to spend time with the Maintenance Service mobile technicians and the engineering and technical staff working at the Oxfordshire Wheelchair Service.




  • Repair, adjust, maintain and refurbish wheelchairs and associated equipment to the required departmental and manufacturers’ standards in a cost-effective manner ensuring all finished items are correct to the specifications supplied.

  • To ensure accepted standards of quality and workmanship are maintained.

  • Maintain good discipline and timekeeping, ensuring all departmental equipment is fit for purpose and maintaining own working area in a tidy and organised fashion.

  • Carry out tasks in order of priority as detailed by their supervisor, reporting back on progression of the allocated tasks.

  • Ensure that completed tasks comply with departmental quality standard.

  • Attend departmental and other meetings as appropriate.

  • Complete all required documentation in an accurate and timely fashion.

  • Be responsible for own equipment and tools and ensure that they are maintained and cleaned and the workshop environment is kept clean and tidy.

  • To liaise with the supervisor and Wheelchair Maintenance Service Manager regarding any problems that may arise.

  • To perform any additional administrative duties as required by the Wheelchair Maintenance Service Manager.

  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic and proactive.

  • A “people person” with the ability to develop strong working relationships and empathise with patients and their families.

  • Adaptable, with a flexible attitude to work and able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions.

  • Able to deal with confidential information and potentially sensitive situations.



Skills Required :

  • Experience in the use and handling of hand tools.

  • I.T. literate, including good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and its applications.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Accuracy and attention to detail and the ability to concentrate when carrying out administrative tasks such as checking goods against delivery and order documentation.

  • Good organisational skills.

  • Energetic and hard working.

  • Physically able to carry out manual work as required.

  • The ability to work under pressure and deal with interruptions whilst carrying out tasks

  • Ability to analyse information, form judgements and advise accordingly

  • ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence).

  • Aptitude for repairing and assembling equipment demonstrated by hobbies and interests.



Future Prospects : We put a lot of time and effort into training our apprentices as we hope that they will all stay with the company as valued employees once their apprenticeship is complete.
