Job Description

Perkins Engines (Peterborough) wish to recruit Higher Engineering Apprentices to start with us in August 2018. We are looking for bright, committed and enthusiastic people who will play a key role in the future of our company.

Our Apprenticeship combines College-based learning with on-the-job work experience to give you insight into various engineering job roles within a large business.



This four-year Apprenticeship will combine real, invaluable work experience with college-based academic learning. The apprenticeship develops individuals into technical areas such as:




  • Controls Engineering: Controls Engineers are responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing and maintaining equipment which is used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery and processes  ensuring they operate effectively, efficiently and safely. These include Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines and electrical equipment. Manufacturing

  • Engineering: Manufacturing Engineers develop and create production processes and technology to assure product and process quality. Working with state of the art mechatronics technology such as robots, conveyors, sensors, and much more, they are responsible for designing, modifying and testing manufacturing methods and equipment, as well as conferring with equipment vendors. They are a key, hands-on part of the machining, assembly, test and finish of the product.



 



Throughout this apprenticeship, you will study Level 4 engineering qualifications  including a BTEC HNC in Engineering (either Mechanical, Manufacturing Engineering or Electrical/Electronics) and a L4 NVQ Diploma, which will evidence on-the-job competency.



On completion of the Apprenticeship Scheme, you will receive your apprenticeship certificate and qualifications will be accredited.



Our apprenticeship scheme is accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), meaning that you can register for free Affiliate IMechE Membership when you successfully enrol in the scheme, and will qualify for professional EngTech accreditation when you complete your qualification.



Please note that the wage is competitive and will be confirmed once appointed.


Personal Qualities :

  • Be strongly motivated to want to achieve an apprenticeship in engineering

  • Have a good attendance record at school, college or work

  • Possess good communication skills and demonstrate values and behaviours



Skills Required :

  • Possess good hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

  • Be interested in mechanical and electrical engineering.

  • (Desirable) Extra-curricular activities, such as voluntary work or part time job



Future Prospects :

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, you are very likely to be offered the opportunity to join an elite team and move onto the first skilled pay grade, as a full-time employee, with plenty of opportunity for long-term progression.

Depending on business needs and the level of competence you show, you may also get the chance to study for a degree relevant to your career advancement or equivalent qualification to help you further progress your skills and development. We';ll also encourage you to apply for Professional Engineering Status with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Former apprentices now occupy many senior management positions within the organisation as career development is a key part of our apprenticeship scheme
