Huge Theme Park Could Create 30,000 Jobs In The UK

A proposed new Universal Destinations & Experiences theme park in Bedford could create as many as 30,000 full and part time jobs in the UK.

Bosses at the US firm Universal say that around 20,000 temporary jobs would be created during the six year construction phase of the project and that at least 8,000 permanent vacancies would initially need to be filled once the theme park is complete.

Announcing the news, Universal Destinations & Experiences said: “Evidence from our other theme parks suggests that for every job supported within our parks, at least 1.5 further jobs may be supported in our supply chain and across all areas of the economy, resulting in a net additional 20,000 jobs supported by the project, as well as supporting high-quality apprenticeships.”

New Ventures President at Universal Destinations & Experiences, Page Thompson, said: “A world-class theme park and resort from Universal has the potential to generate billions in economic benefit for the UK, by creating thousands of high-quality jobs and attracting millions of new visitors to the country.”

“Our phase one plans consist of a theme park, a 500-room hotel and a dining area that people can come to even if they don’t have a theme park ticket. Our intention is that this park would be open 365 days a year, just like all of our other major theme parks.”

“We have a whole series of special events, like our Halloween Horror Nights and carnival parties and it just allows us to attract people throughout this time,” added the NVP.

Tom Wootton, the Mayor of Bedford, welcomed the announcement, saying: “We know this project represents a significant opportunity to increase the profile of Bedford Borough, for job creation and tourism promotion, all with a benefit to local businesses and creates more opportunity for further private sector business investment. These numbers today just go to show the transformational benefits.”

“While we continue to work closely with Universal and they make their decision on the project, there is strong support across the Borough highlighted by Universal’s recent survey as across the Borough residents and businesses alike recognise the transformational benefit it could have,” said the Mayor.
